Haringey people living in controlled parking zones who need home visits from carers will be able to use a free parking permit from next spring.
Haringey Council has announced it will redesign the ‘Resident Carer’s’ permit, which care providers must currently buy.
Carers tend to rely upon their clients, who are usually elderly or disabled, to pay for visitor parking permits each time they need a carer to visit.
Following feedback from residents, some of whom require five carer visits a day, the council consulted during the summer to review the scheme.
As a result, ‘Care at Home’ permits will become available from April.
A new application process needs to be designed, as does the new permit, which will be held by the care recipient but used solely by that person’s carers.
Stephen Whittle, who lives in Tottenham, said: “We are very pleased that the council will be introducing a new free parking permit for those who have care at home.
“It is an additional financial burden and has been a worry for many residents."
The new permit will be valid for three years and limited to one per applicant.
Anyone requiring more than one carer at a time will be able to request paper visitor parking permits at a concessionary charge.
