The leader of Haringey Council has called for a former Labour colleague to resign from her seat after she was expelled from the party over a series of offensive tweets.

Cllr Joy Wallace, elected in May in Fortis Green ward, was suspended from Labour weeks later after concerns were raised about comments posted by her Twitter account.

A decision has now been taken at a national level to exclude her from the Labour Party.

In one online post, the account falsely suggested that a rabbi was “paid and rewarded handsomely” for criticising former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn on BBC Radio 4.

She also posted that a Jewish man with reservations about Mr Corbyn's leadership might prefer “the Israeli way and life”.

In another tweet, Cllr Wallace said Conservative minister Priti Patel did not view herself as ethnic because she had “straight hair and nose”.

After concerns were raised about her online posts, the Twitter account disappeared.

Haringey Labour leader Peray Ahmet said: “I am pleased that the Labour Party’s official investigation has resulted in the expulsion of Cllr Wallace from the Labour Party."

She added: "Cllr Wallace’s conduct shows that she is not only unfit for public office but does not uphold the Labour values of equality, fairness, respect and most pertinently anti-racism, for which she was elected."

She said of the broader Labour Party that "racism and antisemitism have no place" and that she wanted to reassure residents that "any instances will be treated with the utmost seriousness".

She called for Cllr Wallace to resign her seat on the council.

Lib Dem councillor Dawn Barnes, who also represents Fortis Green, said Cllr Wallace should resign from her seat “immediately”.

“Her antisemitic and anti-Asian tweets showed that she was unfit to be a councillor and it now looks as though even the Labour Party, who supported her election, agree,” she said.

“Fortis Green residents deserve a representative who will fight for them, whatever their background, not a councillor who is busy fighting accusations of racism.”

Cllr Barnes also criticised Labour, adding: “Their lack of due diligence when selecting candidates and the snail-like pace with which they dealt with these serious allegations is not good enough and the Haringey Liberal Democrats will continue to call them out on their failings.”

Cllr Wallace was approached for comment both directly and via the Haringey Council press office.
