Candidates for an important election set to take place next month in Haringey have been announced.

Six Haringey residents will vie to replace Labour Cllr Yannis Gourtsoyannis in the council’s Tottenham Hale ward by-election on March 9.

Tottenham Hale and its previous wards have only ever elected Labour councillors since the creation of Haringey borough in 1964.

Cllr Gourtsoyannis stepped down earlier this month after less than a year in office “for personal reasons”.

Following the announcement, council leader Cllr Peray Ahmet said: “I want to thank Yannis for all his hard work as councillor and his dedication to his ward work.

“On behalf of the entire Labour group, I want to wish Yannis the best for the future.”

Here we look at the candidates who are in the running to replace him.

Sean O’Donovan – Labour

 

Sean O’Donovan, a Haringey resident for more than 30 years, said he was “delighted and honoured to be your candidate” in a video posted to Haringey Labour’s Twitter.

He added that he would work with his fellow councillors “to combat hardship, improve housing and increase opportunities for everyone in Tottenham Hale”.

Mr O’Donovan previously ran for Labour in the May 2022 local elections as a candidate in Fortis Green ward, narrowly missing out on election by fewer than 100 votes.

Dr Emma Chan – Green Party

 

Dr Emma Chan is the Green Party candidate for Tottenham Hale. Dr Chan previously ran in St Ann’s Ward for the party in the 2022 local elections, receiving 938 votes.

Dr Chan was recently co-chair of Haringey Green Party and is a Tottenham Hale resident.

Angelos Kyriacos Tsangarides – Conservative and Unionist Party

 

Angelos Kyriacos Tsangarides describes himself as a ‘Haringey native’ and is also chairman of Tottenham Young Conservatives.

He has pledged to “invest in youth centres and community projects”, “fight for more police” and “tackle fly-tipping”.

Allen Windsor – Liberal Democrats

 

Former policeman, Allen Windsor, has lived in Tottenham Hale since 1979.

He said: “As a local of 40 years, I know the issues affecting Tottenham Hale.

“If elected, I would prioritise listening to what matters most to those in the area, and working hard all year round for a safer, cleaner, fairer Tottenham Hale.”

He added that if elected his priorities would include action on fly-tipping, working with the police to reduce criminal activity in the area, and standing up for Tottenham Hale residents.

Other candidates

 

Amelia Allao is the Christian Peoples Alliance candidate and Miraf Negusse Ghebreawariat is running as an Independent.

Tottenham Hale residents have until February 21 to register to vote.
