A man is in a "critical" condition in hospital after officers restrained him following reports he was behaving "erratically".

Police were called at 7.37am on Monday, April 3 to a hospital in Camden, following concerns for the welfare of a man.

According to the Met Police, the man, aged in his fifties, was reported to be "behaving erratically, threatening members of the public and setting fire to his clothing".

Officers attended and the man was detained under the Mental Health Act and taken to a medical facility in Islington.

Whilst there, he was later restrained by officers after he "became agitated", said a Met Police spokesperson.

He became unwell and was given immediate medical attention.

It is believed he is in a critical but stable condition in hospital.

The Met's Directorate of Professional Standards were informed and alerted the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), who have launched an independent investigation.

Superintendent Annmarie Cowley, from the Met's Central North Command, said: "We appreciate this incident will be incredibly concerning to the public.

"Please know we are offering every assistance to the IOPC in their investigation and, due to their important ongoing work, will not be able to comment further at this time."
