A long-standing library will close for refurbishment this month - and it could be a whole year before it reopens.
Haringey Council has announced that Muswell Hill library in Queens Avenue will shut from the start of next week (June 26).
Improvement works, which include building a new lift and accessible toilets, as well as reconfiguring the library’s floorplan are not expected to be completed until spring 2024.
The refurbishment will also see new lighting and furniture installed, as well as a complete redecoration of the library’s interior.
The library recently celebrated its 90th birthday, having first opened in 1931.
During the closure, library users are encouraged to use either Alexandra Park library or Hornsey library.
Alexandra Park library reopened in February after similar works, while Highgate library remains closed until the autumn for refurbishment.
Haringey Council said that the works were part of a programme that has invested more than £4.9 million in libraries across the borough over a four-year period.
Cllr Emily Arkell, cabinet member for culture, communities and leisure, said: “In Haringey we know how important libraries are for our communities.
“These vital facilities are not just about books – they provide space for study, activities for families, places to meet, access to digital technology and so much more.
“We’re proud to be investing in our libraries across the borough, and I’m pleased that Muswell Hill is the latest one to undergo major improvements.
“I look forward to seeing residents benefit from an even better and more accessible library when it reopens next year.”
Items borrowed from Muswell Hill library can be returned and renewed at any council-run library in Haringey, or at libraries in other boroughs which are part of The Libraries Consortium.
