Climate activists have staged a ‘sit-out’ in front of Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer’s constituency office.
The protestors from Green New Deal Rising (GNDR) gathered yesterday (July 21) to demand that Sir Keir, who is MP for Holborn and St Pancras, commits to bolder action on climate change.
This was the second ‘sit-out’ staged by the group in front of the leader of the opposition’s constituency HQ in Crowndale Road near Camden Town.
It comes amid Labour party infighting about the expansion of the ultra-low emission zone (ULEZ) to the outer London boroughs.
On Thursday (July 21) the Labour party narrowly missed out to the Conservatives in the Uxbridge and South Ruislip by-election.
The area is currently set to be subject to the emissions charge at the end of August.
Following the byelection result, Sir Keir said that Labour’s London Mayor Sadiq Khan should “reflect” on the expansion of ULEZ.
Alluding to the Labour leader’s recent comments, protestors outside his constituency office wrote ‘Ultra Low Expectations Zone’ in yellow chalk.
Activists also taped posters to the windows of the building asking Starmer to meet them and support a Green New Deal.
The protest was part of a national campaign by GNDR to urge the Labour party to “be bold” on its climate pledges ahead of the next UK general election, expected to take place in 2024.
The group said that similar protests were also staged in Manchester, Leeds, Exeter, Edinburgh and Brighton, targeting other Labour MPs.
A member of the national campaign group, Jasmine, 22, said: “I am here today because we can't afford to backslide on climate commitments.
“It's high time for Labour to step up to the mark and fight for people and the planet.”
Charlie, 25, from GNDR London added: "I've come out this evening to connect with other young people and show Labour that we’re ready to talk.
“It’s great to see so many young people out to show Keir that we’re here to talk to him, and to make sure Labour commit to the green new deal we need."
The group said that they would return again to Keir Starmer's constituency office next Friday (July 28).
