Celebrities including Deborah Meaden and Bill Bailey took to the canals of Camden to urge people to tackle plastic pollution in the nation's waterways.
The TV stars were pictured collecting litter on the Regent’s Canal around Little Venice and London Zoo in aid of a campaign by waterways charity The Canal and River Trust.
The charity claims that a “staggering” 14 million pieces of plastic end up in its waterways each year.
To help tackle the problem it has enlisted the help of well-known faces to encourage the public to take part in the ‘Big Plastic Pick Up’.
Alongside Dragons’ Den’s Deborah Meaden and comedian Bill Bailey, Blackadder and Time Team star Tony Robinson and Strictly Come Dancing’s Neil Jones have joined the cause.
They are appealing for people to donate £14, pick up 14 pieces of litter and encourage 14 friends to join the fight against plastic.
All the funds raised will go towards the ongoing costs incurred by the charity of cleaning its waterways, which currently stands at £1 million.
Eoin Harris, head of environment and climate action at the Canal and River Trust, said: "It’s the little things we do on our doorstep that can make a world of difference.
“We have worked out that if everyone visiting our canals and waterways picked up just one piece of plastic, the network would be clear of litter within a year.
“Litter has a devastating impact on the wildlife inhabiting canals and rivers.”
He added: “Our aim is to be plastic free as soon as possible and that’s why we’re encouraging everyone to get involved with this year’s Big Plastic Pick Up.”
