Motorists in Camden are set to face increased emissions-based parking charges.

The council has launched a consultation on its proposals, which would include introducing emissions-based fees for motorcyclists and business permits.

Under new plans, the maximum annual charge for resident permits for cars would increase from £648.10 to £838.30 in the next financial year (2024/25).

The minimum fee – which applies to electric cars with zero emissions – would also increase from £45.50 to £138.90 a year.

Currently, only residents who drive larger vehicles pay higher charges for more polluting engines.

But under the new proposals, motorcycle parking permits will also be subject to emissions-based charges as well as the use of solo-motorcycle parking bays, which are currently free.

There have been protests from motorcyclists in neighbouring Hackney about similar increases in parking permit prices.

The diesel surcharge that is currently applied to some of the most polluting vehicles in the borough will be replaced by an air quality surcharge.

This will apply to diesel vehicles first registered before September 2019 and petrol vehicles first registered before 2015.

Paid for parking is also set to be increased and emissions-based charging will be applied for the first time.

The number of vehicles that can be registered under a single permit will also be limited to one, rather than the current three.

Camden Council’s consultation opened yesterday (October 4) and will run until November 5.
