An “age-friendly” plan is being unveiled today (March 6) by the Mayor of Barnet in a drive to make life more active for people over 65.
Barnet joined the Network of Age-Friendly Communities last year, with the council commissioning Age UK to get people’s views about the population of pensioners set to rise by more than half over the next 20 years.
“We want to get ahead of the curve to improve life,” Age UK Barnet’s chief executive Helen Newman said. “Any changes we make will have been inspired by older voices fed back into the community.”
A survey of 1,000 older people across Barnet has helped get a better understanding about “the barriers to ageing” in society.
The action plan covers housing, transport, job opportunities and social activities as well as things like public toilets and park benches.
It is being uncovered in detail on March 6 at North Finchley’s Artsdepot centre in Nether Street, by Tally Ho Corner, along with a public exhibition of paintings, drawings, knitting and pottery by members of Age UK Barnet’s art class and day club.
