Six Northern line stations are shut for over a week as one station undergoes a major redevelopment.

Stations between Golders Green and Edgware are not open today (April 2) as part of a series of planned closures this year begin while Colindale station is being replaced with a new building.

This means there is no service at Golders Green, Brent Cross, Hendon Central, Colindale, Burnt Oak and Edgware until next Thursday (April 11).

Later this year, there will be other periods when these stations will be closed.

Which travel alternatives are in place?

The NL1 Rail replacement bus service will be running between Golders Green and Canons Park during this time.

If you are traveling to or from the Edgware area, it may be faster to travel via Canons Park on the Jubilee line, Transport for London (TfL) has suggested.

The bus will run on all closure days, but not during Night Tube hours. Overnight, people should use the N5 bus instead, which stops near all Northern line stations on the Edgware branch.

At Brent Cross station, NL1 buses will stop on Golders Green Road (A502), with northbound buses at Limes Avenue (Stop C) and southbound buses at Highfield Avenue (Stop P).

Alternatively, at Brent Cross stop P, on Golders Green Road, you can also get local buses 83, 183 and 240 to Golders Green.

There are also Thameslink services to and from Mill Hill Broadway and Hendon stations.

Why is it closed?

Construction will be taking place at Colindale station for the new building from June 7 until December.

Last year TfL announced that £43.1 million from the Government’s Levelling Up Fund has been allocated to upgrade both Colindale and Leyton stations, meaning they will have step-free access for the first time.

TfL said that Colindale station, in its current state, was projected to reach passenger capacity by 2026.

Under the new plans, the 1960s entrance will be replaced with a new building, spacious ticket hall and step-free access, with work set to begin in 2024.

It added Colindale is “one of London’s most deprived areas” and the redevelopment will be “central” to enabling the building of 11,400 new homes for people in the area.

When are the other planned closures this year?

The current temporary closure dates set are:

  • April 2 to April 11

  • June 8 to June 9

  • June 15 to June 16

  • June 29 to June 30

  • July 27 to July 28
