Thousands flocked to Highgate's annual Fair in the Square on Saturday which fired the starting gun for the area's annual community festival.

Pond Square was busy with around 100 crafts, books, plant and food stalls and two stages hosting a programme of live music and entertainment.

Local societies, charities, schools, businesses, and theatres take part in the event, which draws around 10,000 visitors to Highgate and this year included a dog show, children's art tent, displays, choir performances, sports activities and workshops.

Madeleine Cosgrove is one of the 14-strong committee of volunteers who organise the fair.

She said: "This year’s Fair was another great day with lots of the usual fun including the dog show, Mini Mozart Children’s Tent, main stage acts and range of stalls.

"We had lots of new activities too, with a second stage and workshop area at St Michael’s church, pus skateboarding, basketball and cricket.

"We are so grateful to all the local volunteers and helpers that make the Fair such a success.

"A big shout out goes to the local schools who participate and particularly to the secondary schools Highgate, Channing and St Aloysius’ College - the students were such a big help on the day."

The fair was the start of The Highgate Festival - nine days of events and activities in the area's pubs, theatres, and community spaces.

This year's programme features karaoke, a radio show about the area's musical heroes, an exhibition to mark the centenary of the Holly Lodge Estate, and a children's film competition judged by Oppenheimer director Christopher Nolan's mum.Crowds enjoying the entertainment in Pond Square on Saturday June 8.Crowds enjoying the entertainment in Pond Square on Saturday June 8.
