A girls' secondary school that encourages its pupils to be "high achieving and happy" has been given Ofsted's highest rating.

Inspectors visited Parliament Hill School, in Highgate Road, Highgate, on May 22 and 23.

A report from the education watchdog published today (July 8) gave it the top 'outstanding' score for its quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development and leadership and management.

Its sixth form provision, which is also part of the LaSWAP scheme with La Sainte Union, William Ellis School and Acland Burghley, was rated one grade lower at 'good'.

In their report, inspectors praised the "well designed", "ambitious" curriculum which also helps students connect their ideas and apply them to the modern world.

They said: "In history, pupils make connections between the past and the present. They study the ancient Islamic empire and African kingdoms before thinking about the legacy and impact of the British Empire on people today."

Inspectors also praised trips to the Globe Theatre and the Charles Dickens Museum to support learning.

The report noted pupils’ work was of consistently high quality, adding: "This school is driven by its ethos to support all pupils to be ‘high achieving and happy’.

"Staff know pupils well and have very high expectations for them."

The school's support for pupils with special educational needs was also singled out, including its "Parli Plus" provision, which offers additional help to pupils.

Among many areas praised were the "consistently calm and purposeful" sixth form environment, "well considered" personal development programme and the range of extra-curricular clubs, such as debating, gardening and sports.

Pupils, and sixth form students are encouraged to develop as responsible, active citizens, inspectors added, with the junior leadership team regularly contributing ideas at governing body meetings.

Headteacher Sarah Creasey said: "The outcome is testament to the tremendous commitment of all staff who work so hard to make Parliament Hill a unique place to be.

"Inspectors were impressed by the learning that they saw in lessons and the confidence, individuality and sense of belonging that is built on strong relationships in our community.

"We are very proud of our achievements and grateful to families for their support which makes such a difference."

Danny Silverstone, chair of governors, said he was "delighted".

He added: "This is the result of a great deal of hard work over many years by our staff and students under the inspiring leadership of Sarah Creasey, our headteacher.

"It is also a tribute to our wider school community including Camden Council, who have been so supportive through our journey towards outstanding status.

"I am convinced that the future for our school will be bright."

Cllr Marcus Boyland, Camden Council’s cabinet member for best start for children and families, said: "This is a testament to the hard work and dedication of staff, students and governors, as well as the support of parents.

"We’re proud of the quality of education, opportunities and support offered for students in Camden and our secondary schools are high achieving and ambitious for all students."
