On Saturday, September 28, Highgate is again set to play host to the London Cycling Campaign’s Urban Hill Climb, with hundreds of riders preparing to test themselves against the indomitable Swain’s Lane.
Holding a special place in the hearts of many cyclists in London, the Urban Hill Climb offers the perfect opportunity for people of all ages to come down and cheer on those brave enough to take on the climb!
With food vendors, coffee and plenty of other drinks available, spectators can fuel up before shouting encouragement to the riders and ringing their cowbells.
Whether you’re coming down to support a loved one daring to face the climb, or are simply there to soak up the atmosphere, the Urban Hill Climb always makes for a great day for all the family.
After last year's ride, we caught up with a few of the riders to find out just what the event meant to them.
Joise said, “Last year was my first time doing the Urban Hill Climb, and the atmosphere was just amazing.
“The cycling community turns up in force so there are lots of familiar faces but also new ones too.
“There’s nothing quite like hearing your name cheered all the way up, to help with that extra bit of spirit as you suddenly, but briefly, find yourself wondering if this was a good idea…
“My plan this year is to remember where the hill finishes and not stop pedalling until I’m sure I’m over that line! I came fourth last year so I'm hoping for a better result in 2024!”
Two riders who are no strangers to Urban Hill Climb are Martin Treacher and his cycling companion, Franklin the dog.
“Of all the events that I’ve attended this is by far the best atmosphere. From start to finish everyone is always so friendly and encouraging,” said Martin.
“It’s so lovely to see how the cycling community comes together to cheer everyone on.
“The more of these events are held the better in my opinion, because where else can you see a man with a dog on his back and then a cargo bike full of kids?!”
Everyone is welcome to come along, and if you’re interested in taking part to this year’s Urban Hill Climb, head to our website for all the details: lcc.org.uk/events/urban-hill-climb-2024/
