A 214-year-old pub with "good local beers and even better cooking" has been named as one of Britain’s best cosy boozers.
The Hero in Shirland Road, Maida Vale, was one of 50 pubs to recently be awarded the accolade by The Good Food Guide.
Pubs on the list were described as those that serve up “relaxed, warm vibes, good local beers and even better cooking” – in essence, the perfect hangouts as the autumn draws in.
This Maida Vale boozer has been restored by the team behind the Pelican in Notting Hill, and in the guide’s words – it’s a “real looker”.
Decked out with timber frames, emerald-green tiling and Chesterfield chairs, the pub offers stylish comforts for its customers.
Spread across three levels with an intimate dining room at the very top, the ground floor serves real ales and a menu of British pub classics.
But the Good Food Guide promises that the first floor, called the ‘Grill Room’, is a very different prospect.
Its review says: “We felt as if we had been upgraded to business class as we admired the high corniced ceilings, sash windows, natural oak panelling and leather banquettes, while the arrival of warm brioche with creamy salted butter added to the feel-good vibe – as did the sharp, jaunty service.”
The menu here focuses on special cuts of meat and fish cooked over an open fire, which can be enjoyed alongside a wine list that has been “tailored to suit most budgets”.
The Hero at 55 Shirland Road is open from 12pm until 12am on Friday and Saturday nights, closing at 11.30pm on other weeknights and at 10pm on a Sunday.
