Planning permission granted for Euston Wetherspoon pub

Full planning permission has been granted to replace the one-time lap-dancing nightclub Sophisticats in Eversholt Street with a new Euston watering hole.

It is expected the venue will be called the Captain Matthew Flinder, after remains of the Royal Navy explorer were discovered by HS2 archaeologists at a site in Euston in 2019.

The plan states that the venue will have a maximum capacity of 244 customers, however the applicant states it is “highly unlikely” that trade will reach that level.

There is set to be a total of 110 seats inside and 30 seats in an outdoor area of the pub.

Camden Council has said that permission has been granted if work begins not later than the end of three years from March 28.

The council said: “All new external work shall be carried out in materials that resemble, as closely as possible, in colour and texture those of the existing building, unless otherwise specified in the approved application.”

Designers nineteen47, on behalf of JD Wetherspoon, submitted applications to change the use of the existing ground and basement floors, replace the shopfront and provide outdoor seating.

Both the building and adjacent terrace are locally listed buildings dating from the early 19th century.

According to the plans, the frontage will be replaced with a new entrance and large windows.

The pub chain submitted a premises management plan this month in which it outlined measures to stop punters from disrupting neighbouring residents.

These include door staff at the entrance and exit during peak trading times, who will remind customers to keep noise levels down.

Outdoor tables and chairs will be removed from the front area by 11.30pm and will not be reinstated before 7am each day.

Drinks cannot be taken beyond the outside seating area, and signage as well door staff at peak trading times will remind people not to bring their glasses beyond the tables.

Wetherspoon spokesperson Eddie Gershon previously said: “We believe the former club in Euston will make a great site for a Wetherspoon pub.

“We believe that it will appeal to people of all ages and be an asset to the area.

“We are looking to invest approximately £2 million on the development and create more than 50 new jobs, subject to planning and licensing approval.”
