Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou was pleased to see his players get their rewards in a 4-1 victory over Newcastle United.

Spurs ended a run of five Premier League matches without a win as Destiny Udogie, Richarlison (2) and Son Heung-min (penalty) got on the scoresheet.

And their Australian head coach is now hoping they can continue to move forwards after their recent blip, having lost 2-1 at home to West Ham United last Thursday.

"They (the players) got their rewards which I'm pleased about because they put in a massive effort today," Postecoglou told Sky Sports.

"I thought we were a lot more bright in our front third, and a lot more aware of the opportunities that were before us, and I thought Sonny was excellent, particularly in the first half, he really caused them problems.

"There's not too much science behind it - we're getting some players back. I'm not going to speak for Eddie (Howe, the Newcastle manager) but you can see they're running on fumes at the moment (in terms of injuries).

"We've gone through that. We're hopefully coming out the other side and hopefully that will mean we've got more promising performances."

When opposite number Eddie Howe was asked if Newcastle's performance could be explained as a tired team that had run out of gas, he added: "I think it's a little bit too simplistic to say that. I think that there's an element of truth there of course.

"Difficult game, and I thought Tottenham played very well. I thought we had our moments in the game, especially at the beginning of the second half, where I thought we were excellent until they scored.

"But we weren't at our best physically today, and I think you could see that, and I think the lads were giving everything but with not enough resources to give more."

Newcastle forward Callum Wilson accused Spurs keeper Guglielmo Vicario of 'a lack of respect' during the contest.

Wilson, who came on in the second half, was asked about an exchange between him and Vicario, and said: "There's a way to win, isn't there?

"I think we saw it in the week when Everton were winning and (Jordan) Pickford was messing around. The goalkeeper starts pulling faces and messing around and it's just a lack of respect I thought. But I said my piece, we're grown men and we move on."

Spurs are back in action at Nottingham Forest on Friday (8pm).
